Several years ago when the dot com bubble burst, a new concept was born to be known as enterprise architecture. It primarily addresses the main problem of fixing the issue before it arises fundamentally in a complex IT ecosystem in terms of data or application or integration architecture.
"Catch them young" is the para phrase I always enact with my peer architects.
It also addresses two primary needs of business who are enabled by IT function. Currently it is known as CIO Organisation.
- System complexity Organizations were spending more and more money building IT systems but it became redundant or happened in silos over a period of time
- Lack of business alignment Organizations were finding it more and more difficult to keep those increasingly expensive IT systems aligned with dynamics of business need.
It boils down to more cost, less value. It became increasingly complex when Web 2.0 and Industry 2.0 evolved. Even the large organisation who streamlined the architecture process cannot address this without a unique enterprise architecture tool or platform.
Enterprise architecture tool or platform becomes the oxygen of the IT ecosystem of organisations around the world who follow the foundation principles along the four frameworks evolved over a period of time.
- The Zachman Framework for Enterprise Architectures Although self-described as a framework, is actually more accurately defined as a taxonomy
- The Open Group Architecture Framework (TOGAF) Although called a framework, is actually more accurately defined as a process
- The Federal Enterprise Architecture Can be viewed as either an implemented enterprise architecture or a proscriptive methodology for creating an enterprise architecture
- The Gartner Methodology Can be best described as an enterprise architectural practice
- SAFe The Scaled Agile Framework which operationalize EA in an agile environment
